Waiting for the Parade

Wonderful as it is, Lakeland, Florida, is unlike Heaven in many ways. Nevertheless, every Christmas time there is an event which reminds me of a spiritual truth.

The annual Christmas parade, which happens tonight, December 4, 2014, draws crowds so large that people stake out their seating claims the night before and all through the day.

All along the parade route sidewalks fill with reserved seating. Most are roped in place. In some cases people arrive early and spend the day guarding their claim.

By three in the afternoon wide swaths of traffic patterns change as streets are closed off in preparation for the seven o'clock event.

What especially comes to my mind as I drive among the preparations is a promise which God gave to those who will seek his mercy through the saving work of Jesus Christ on Calvary. Paul tells us that those who have been saved by grace through faith in Christ have been given reserved seating in Heaven for history's Parade of Parades. I can easily imagine us that day, watching the vanguard pass by and then beholding the King and, with a beckoning wave of his hand, leaving our seats behind to join the gala demonstration of God's good glory. As the old hymn put it...

WHAT A DAY THAT WILL BE !!!
