The Look of a Follower

The unspoken but obvious factor in the account of Abraham's servant was his integrity. It was that which put him "in the way" to be led through and among circumstances. This coincides with the character of being "led by the Spirit" revealed in the New Testament.

Whether it is Abraham's servant looking for a bride, the man looking for a car, or the couple wondering where God wants them to serve Him, the first issue is not a search for circumstantial direction or confirmation. The first concern is being a person of moral, ethical and relational integrity. We are not oriented to know what circumstances to seek or how to interpret events without that in-the-way-ness which comes with following God's Spirit.

What does that following look like?

Is your attention focused on Jesus and his character? How well do you know the biography of His walk among us revealed in the Gospels?

Is His accomplishment as your sin-bearer your only claim to all of your privileges in God, or is it a kind of background feature of your faith base?

Do you have a heart to know and be like Him in a lifestyle of worship?

Do you have a zeal to become who you are in Christ as opposed to what you were in yourself? That is, do you relish the challenge of replacing old orientations with new ones?

This Christ-centricity is the heart-beat of being led by the Spirit. The pathway is revealed in the growth steps found in 2 Peter 1:5-8, which takes us from faith to the incorporation of moral integrity, factual knowledge, disciplined self-control and stay-with-it endurance until we are awed by God and reflecting Christ-likeness in our decision making and relationships.
